I thought I might as well get another review in while I am in my slightly-motivated mode. I have motivation levels, which vary randomly, and I after a particularly long bout of unmotivated procrastination, I find myself clinging to even low-levels of motivation to get something, anything done!
So I wanted to review Avalon Organics Shampoo. Any one of them. Take your pick.
I came across Avalon Organics, again at a store here, in the same isle I got my Kiss My Face Olive Oil Soap. At that time, I bought myself a face wash - and then, later, I bought Avalon Organics Clarifying Lemon Shampoo, (prior to this one, I had tried one of their other shampoos, but alas, I do not recall the name). Anyways, BOTH times, I ran into some trouble. How much trouble? Let's just say, in star trek terminology (yes, I am a trekkie) I ran into a possible warp core breach! (For those of you that aren't trek fans, this basically means, not good at all!)
I used the shampoo for a week, before noticing that my hair had suddenly become heavy, limp, oily looking, and from then on, every day I used it, I couldn't last until evening without having limp, oily-looking, gunky hair. Then, one day, I blow-dried my hair. (I try not to do it often, but sometimes I have to, considering I have longer-than-shoulder-length hair, it remainds wet, even after being wrung dry several times in the shower, rubbed with 2 different towels, and then wrapped in another one!) The blow-drying was a BAD idea. I felt to crown of head, and noticing what felt like, melted wax, clinging to my hair. I had no time to do anything about it then, so I waited until the next day to wash it off. I had no other shampoo in the shower (we ran out) and I tried using the same one, this time rinsing a ridiculous amount of times, all the while wondering if the lakes were shaking their fists at me, and how high the hydro bill would be!) Anyway, guess how pleased I was when I was out of the shower and once again drying my hair with the towel when - what do I feel? GUNGKY yuckiness stuck to my hair as if I had never tried to wash it out! I also noticed a lot of my hair was now tangled, and I got quite a few strands falling out from being man-handled by the aggressive rinsing which did NOTHING to help the gunk problem. So, I headed to my nearest drug store and headed straight to the mainstream shampoo aisle and got the first one that looked reasonably priced. $3.99 for a bottle of Garnier "94% biodegradable - colour free - paraben free- but certaintly not sulfate free- shampoo."
Despite having a cold and wanting nothing other than to crawl under the covers, I washed my hair and voila - the nasty gunk was gone! It took THREE lathers, and another round of rigourous rinsing, but the gunk came out. I promised myself I would NEVER use another Avalon Ogranics Shampoo again! Never! At the drug store, I looked at two seperate "nantural" shampoos, one I had tried before, but the price and the fact that my husband hates the smell stopped me from purchasing it, and instead I bought a Kiss My Face Shampoo. I haven't tried it yet, and it is sitting all lonely beside it's nemesis the Garnier bottle, but I wanted to give my hair sometime to relax (I plan to use the Garnier again for another wash before I try anything "natural").
PROS: The good things I can say about this shampoo, is that it smells AMAZING, like lemon candy or lemon cake, something sweet and lemony basically. Also, the price isn't that bad at all - 8 bucks a bottle, and you get more than for example, Giovanni shampoos , $13/250ml! Now here's where it gets interesting. My husband has short short hair right now, and other than having to wash his hair everyday (which he does almost everyday anyway) he really had no concerns. His hair was oilier, but perhaps that is with all natural shampoos, because there are no harsh chemicals to strip your hair of it's natural oils. So for all you men, or women with shorter hair, by all means, as Captain Catherine Janeway of the Star Ship Voyager would say, "Lay in a Course at Maximum Warp!" Go ahead and try it, you will enjoy the smell, and it is better for you than poisoning yourself slowly with other shampoos full of nasty chemicals.
